Thinking about your selection of a cultural artifact for our shared analysis, I thought it might be helpful for you to read John Fiske's 1995 essay, "Popular Culture." In it, he identifyies his understanding of "popular culture" as a term then emerging at the forefront of critical theory. Fwiw, I am a long time admirer of Fiske's work. And while I could do better to render the key ideas as slides, the text is so rich.
